Finding out you’re pregnant when you weren’t expecting it can bring a lot of emotions. You may feel overwhelmed, excited, scared, uncertain—or several of these at once. You don’t have to have everything figured out today.

If you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy, taking things one step at a time can help you feel more prepared as you consider what comes next.

1. Give Yourself Time to Process

An unexpected pregnancy can bring a lot of questions. It’s okay if you don’t immediately know how you feel or what you want to do.

Before making a decision, give yourself time to process the news and gather accurate information. Talking with someone you trust can also help you work through your thoughts and concerns.

2. Learn About Your Options

Pregnancy decisions can feel overwhelming when you’re trying to sort through everything at once. Learning about your options can help you make an informed decision that reflects your circumstances, values, and goals.

Depending on your situation, you may be considering parenting, adoption, or abortion. Understanding what each option could look like for you can be an important first step.

3. Consider Your Support System

You don't have to navigate an unexpected pregnancy alone.

Think about the people in your life who can offer encouragement, practical help, or simply a listening ear. You may also want to connect with a local organization that can help you understand available resources and support.

4. Ask Questions

It’s normal to have questions about pregnancy, parenting, adoption, abortion, finances, relationships, or what happens next.

Don't be afraid to ask questions or seek out reliable information. Getting answers can help replace uncertainty with a better understanding of your choices.

5. You Don't Have to Figure Everything Out Today

One decision doesn't have to answer every question about your future.

Take things one step at a time. Gather information, consider your circumstances, and seek support from people who will listen without pressuring you.
